director SPENCER WHALE talks about his vision for Kin
(fresh off The Tank's top-selling show Vile Isle & Broadway's Lempicka)
Witness the magic of "Kin" as Anna, an Ivy-League poet scholar, and Sean, an Irish personal trainer, fall in love. In this play, however, we rarely see the two lovers together. The story is composed instead of scenes that might otherwise be found on the cutting room floor of a romantic dramedy. Audiences will come to know Anna and Sean’s love through a deeper look into their secondary relationships: Anna’s eccentric best friend, Sean’s agoraphobic mother, Anna’s distant father, and more. Friend and family ties stretch across Ireland and New York, revealing the complexities of connection and community.

DONATE AND BECOME A PART OF OUR KIN
Making Our Space Theatre Co. is all about lifting up underrepresented voices and building a true artistic community here in NYC. This December, we’re thrilled to stage Kin by queer Jewish playwright Bathsheba Doran, a story that reflects our mission to build community and amplify diverse voices in theatre.
Every tax-deductible donation helps bring productions like Kin to life and fuels our programs, like our industry showcases, that empower artists. Join us in “making space” for fresh stories and perspectives in the arts and for artists looking to carve their own path—your support keeps NYC’s indie theatre vibrant, inclusive, and accessible!
MOS MISSION:
Founded for actors and by actors in 2023, our mission is to cultivate a diversified community of experienced theater artists, whether emerging or established, who possess collaborative spirits and uphold the highest standards of excellence. We seek to create a platform for these artists, where:
-
their talents are uniquely presented in communal and affordable showcases for industry professionals
-
their skillsets are honed through our classes and workshops
-
their contributions are an integral part of the MOS ensemble, where they have the opportunity to participate in our full scale productions
Alongside expanding our artistic community, we strive to create a home for new and underproduced plays, original performances, and works from playwrights of underrepresented communities, with the goal of strengthening the kinship between talent, industry professionals, and NYC theatre audiences.
"Making Our Space is an amazing garden for creativity, talent and passion to thrive. Their intimate setting is home to a remarkable ensemble of actors who pour their hearts into every scene, creating a labor of love out of every performance. It is evident that the team works tirelessly to create a platform to open doors for its actors and allow them to express themselves freely. Making Our Space is a place where talent shines and is truly a testament to the power of community."

productions:
MOS is especially focused on new and underproduced plays, including those written by playwrights from underrepresented communities. Each season will consist of readings, pieces produced and performed by our ensemble members, and full-scale productions.
showcases:
Unlike other for-profit showcase companies, the MOS showcase is non-profit backed, affordable, and returns agency to actors. Actors select their own material, help co-produce the show, and become a part of the MOS community through a two month process. This includes rehearsing with a professional theater director, private rehearsals with their scene partner, collaborative actor work sessions, a friends & family open dress rehearsal and an industry performance(s).
for industry:
We strive to break the showcase mold by freeing industry guests from standardized note taking and q&a, instead offering an entertaining night of talent followed by a networking cocktail hour and afterparty.
classes & workshops:
"...you’ve got to do the work. You can’t do that without preparing the work. The great ones work that hard all the way to the end.”-- Jeff Daniels
We believe for an actor, like any craft, the training never stops, but we also recognize the need for affordable, accessible, and high quality training opportunities that exist outside of larger and more costly institutional education. Our topic-specific classes and workshops will be a chance for actors to hone their skills and expand their process beyond what is offered in a traditional training environment and are for actors seeking more affordable learning opportunities and a self-curated path to training.
Upcoming classes will be announced late summer of 2024.
